Taking what I learned from the past two speed dating iterations, I tweaked the lesson slightly. After another day of watching students immersed in books, I am hopeful that I created an improved activity that sparked the interest of students and motivated them to view reading as an enjoyable pastime. I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside. The best part is that this lesson model is so versatile that you can find a creative way to use it for just about anything! I facilitate this lesson to help my students practice their rhetorical skills during our unit on persuasion.
To do this, I use a variety of topics, ranging from silly to serious, so that the debates spark some friendly controversy. Speed debating is great way to incorporate a lot of practice to familiarize students with the strategies and structure of debate. Just like speed debating, this strategy involves mini discussions over essential questions.
This helps students critically think, hear different perspectives, and articulate their ideas in a low-risk setting. I like to use speed discussion during thematic units, as a way to facilitate synthesis of different texts. This strategy is also a great way to expose students to different ideas and perspectives during the pre-writing phase of the writing process.

I know many teachers have tried some version of this activity. First, we formed two circles, one inside the other. One circle faced outward. The other faced inward. Students stood in front of one another, and I with the easy job stood with the timer and the camera. We talked books for as many minutes as it took for every student to talk one-on-one with every other student.

“Speed Dating” Teaching Strategy
This lesson is an individual assignment on the first day unless the teacher has so many students that they opt to have multiple students play a single character and a group activity on the second day. The teacher has some leeway as to whether they want to provide certain primary and secondary sources or whether they want to treat it as more of a research assignment, where students can search for their own information. Students tend to learn facts about different presidents but sometimes they have trouble relating presidents to one another and making connections over time.

If you want your students to learn words for the purpose of remembering them and actually using them in reading and writing, you need to make sure they engage with their vocabulary in unique and meaningful ways. Keep reading. I like using continuums because they help students reflect on their understanding of the word, and they also give me a valuable quick check for understanding.
Some of my favorite ways to use continuums are to ask questions like these:. Gallery activities can work a couple different ways, but I love how they encourage students to think about new words creatively. After your students have been introduced to their word lists and have spent some time interacting with the vocabulary, assign each student a different word or words.
On the day students bring in the objects, display them around the room in a gallery format. You can use pictures instead of objects if you prefer. Ask students to walk around the room and take some notes regarding which words they think pair best with which objects or pictures. Then, as a class, hold a discussion. This one is always engaging and enjoyable — not to mention memorable. This activity works really well as a review of multiple vocabulary units as long as too many words are not included.
For instance, maybe one set of partners has the word abase. Their job is to work together to make a skit that revolves around this word.

One way I have fostered a love of books in my classroom is by allowing my students to read for 10 minutes at the beginning of each class. I prioritize this time more than any other time during my minute class. We never skip it…ever. I allow them to choose any free-choice book that they desire. During this time, I read with my students.
I read. I model how much I value my reading time by not allowing any interruptions during this time. Once we establish this habit, all of my students have their books out reading….

Have you ever heard of speed dating? It’s an opportunity for people to quickly meet a large number of people to potentially date. Attendees are paired with each person attending the session for two minutes. At the end of the two minutes, the people move to their next partner. You can also use this concept as an effective speed meeting icebreaker. The goal? Attendees meet a large number of people in a short period of time, The goal, of course, in speed dating, is to find one or more people with whom you’d like to spend more time on an actual date.
Participants exchange names and contact information during the two minutes so that they can connect with the people who appealed to them following the speed dating session. It’s an efficient way for people who are interested in finding a special someone to meet a large number of people quickly in a safe environment. Presumably, other attendees share similar goals and expectations when they decide to participate in speed dating activities.
You might even want to think about the activity as corporate speed dating, a chance for participants to meet each other quickly, and perhaps, find potential close colleagues.
